Yesterday this beautiful monochrome experiment with graphite watercolour arrived from Pat, There are lots of subtleties of tone that sadly my scanner is refusing to pick up without overdarkening the darks,
Pat you've caught the light in woodland beautifully with this - it's so much like walking through our local woods with those lovely patches of mystery where you can hardly tell what's going on, and the intensely backlit leaves, silhouetted against darker foliage behind.
I have some water soluble graphite pencils but can see that this is another thing to add to my wish list!
and on the reverse
Sadly these little studies don't scan well but they are really lovely with subtlety and lost edges.

What an exquisite monochrome! I think a lot of us will be inspired by this enticing look into the glade to try graphite watercolour.
I agree with Charlene - another thing to add to the wish list. But its a lovely sketch - Pat you capture woodlands beautifully that sense of silence apart from the rustle of leaves and birdsong.
This really is so appealing in monochrome; the relaxed atmosphere is captured perfectly.
That soluble graphite looks absolutely amazing. Of course it's the skill of the artist which makes it look so good! I agree with Bridget, you have a real talent with trees. :)
Who makes it?
A really lovely postcard - I'm kicking myself that I didn't buy some of that graphite when I had the chance, though whether I'd get this great result is another question... just shows that you don't need colour to vividly paint a scene.
Beautifully composed, Pat and the tree is wonderful. I think I'd have more success with a bottle of Pat than a bottle of soluble graphite. :)
Wow,that is really amazing, only you could take some pixie dust and transform it into a beautiful painting! I love the backlit tree, the whole composition is so inviting.
Thanks, everyone. I am really enjoying this little tub of graphite. It doesn't erase like other graphite though but you can’t beat the ease of use. I just wet the cake of graphite with the little spray bottle that Desiree gave me, spray some water in the lid and the painting just happens.
Sorry, I forgot, the ArtGraf is made by Viarco and the product page is here

Thank you Pat, giving us the address of ArtGraf.
I love the way you have used this material.
It is a proof that color is not always necessarily the better choice to express a certain atmosphere.
I love your monochrome Pat...it is stunning!
