The City of Dresden- from Martin

I received my postcard from Martin today! It is a wonderful sketch of the city of Dresden and one of the famous Castles views and bridge. He says he often comes here to see something? I must say that if Martin wasn't an artist I would think he was a doctor with the handwriting I am unable to read! Sorry Martin, I love the card all the same! It has such a mood to it, as do all your cards. The wonderful values  give the river a real shine. There is even a hint of color in the hills!

Hello Desiree, I am glad you like the card. I apologise for my bad handwriting which looks indeed terrible. A handwriting analyst would probably diagnose that the probant must have suffered from a heavy lack of oxygen during writing.

What you see is one of the notorious Canaletto views of Dresden which are still interesting to look at even though the whole city, each and every shopping window seems to be plastered with them.

There is so much of the eye of the printmaker in this beautiful drawing/painting. The style is beautiful, and it could have stood on its monotone values but I love the soft, elegant hints of colour. I want one too!

I like the powerful expression of this card and Martins obvious intention to avoid any sweetness in most of his work.

Fabulous card! I love that there is no sweetness, as Albrecht says, and it's so dark and moody!

Martin's cards are always a great reminder that you don't need great light conditions to produce great art!

Wonderful tones and marks, I hope Martin makes prints of this beautiful drawing.

I love this card - I love the scratchiness of the background and the drawing of the bridge and the monochrome which is so suited to this subject.

I excellent art piece Martin, This is what I call one of those big paintings that happen to be small. This could easily be in any museum right next to every other masterpiece. Excellent! Mood, line, form, style, dynamic, I am looking for the right word and they all leave me short of describing a really good painting.
