Postcard from Victoria, Canada

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church - Charlene Brown 2011

I got my first postcard from Charlene in Victoria, Canada. Its a lovely sketch done in water soluble inks - a medium I've never tried before - which I think has given it a freshness and captures the colours of the buildings really well. I'm away to Google maps to find Victoria and have a look at that part of the world. Also Charlene says the church had an incidental role in the 'Pig War' - the last armed conflict between Canada and the U.S.A. - such an unusual name for a war - in which there seemed to be a stand off with the only casualty being the poor, unfortunate pig!!!

Thankyou Charlene for adding the Happy Chinese New Year stamp - a lovely touch.

nice one Charlene, the looseness of the paint works well with the line - fresh and uncluttered and a fascinating snippet of history too :>)

Its lovely to see your card here - on the blog Charlene. But its even nicer to be able to handle it and feel the texture of the watercolour paper and the reality of the sparkling colours.Thankyou.

Charlene, wonderful, fresh watercolor painting, I love your sketching too, just enough. I will have to go online and look up the "Pig War", who were the pigs?

There was just the one pig. He belonged to a (variously described as Canadian, British and Irish) Presbyterian and was shot by an American. In fairness to your side, it wasn't the pig's first foray into American territory.

Lovely Charlene - as Bridget says, sparkling, and uncluttered (I'm still trying to fit the whole of Joburg into every sketch!), and I love the interesting snippets of history you so often add to your paintings. Poor pig!

We get history lessons as well - how wonderful!

I can see we're going to have a lot of ink in this postcard project = of the drawing and painting variety. The ink certainly gives a nice fresh perspective on your home Charlene.

Maybe we need to supply Google Street map links of GPS co-ordinates? ;)

I love the history lesson too. I like the way the sky is blooming with color helping the church stand out all the more. Very fresh. Oh, and I guess I should say, “Sorry about the pig.”

Full of that lovely, distinctive Charlene style. And yes, wonderful blooms in the sky.
